Tarian Ulek Mayang

The Ulek Mayang is a healer's trance dance accompanied by singing and music in Terengganu. The dance is to ward off evil spirit that befall a person. It was believed that in the olden days, during a heavy storm, a fisherman was possessed by an evil spirit of the sea, he was then brought ashore to be healed by a bomoh, a traditional Malay healer. Using young coconut frond to ward of the evil spirit, it is of no match so the seven princess were called instead to help. Seven actors beautifully dressed represent the 7 princesses who come to visit the patient when the bomoh is treating him. Traditional musical instruments are used to accompany the singing which is in the form of rhymes and poems.

Although Tarian Ulek Mayang was once a folk ritual ceremonial in the Malay society, with its gentle and graceful movement, it has become one of the beautiful traditional dance in Terengganu culture.
